Amongst many industrial refrigeration sites throughout New Zealand, Fonterra’s Clandeboye site has large plant operating on “phased-out” refrigerant R-22.  As duty of environmental care and mitigation, Fonterra chose to upgrade a cold-storage system to an environmentally alternative and sought options. 

Active Refrigeration have designed and engineered an efficient, cost-effective solution to the site reducing a large Refrigerant R-22 charge in the process.  Active Refrigeration had already completed large chilled and cold-storage facilities in Whareroa and Mosgiel sites for Fonterra yet Clandeboye arrived with a difference – ammonia containment within the engine room.

Active have installed a primary critically charged ammonia system using pumped volatile CO2 as operational secondary for issue to chilled and cold spaces.  The system has been engineered to refrigerate 5 large cold-stores plus central services chilled corridor.  An innovative approach to CO2 valving and piping throughout along with intelligent defrost and control engineering has led to a very efficient, safe solution which stands alone as a first in New Zealand and has received significant accolade from within the Fonterra team.
