Active Refrigeration Launches Inaugural Apprentice Academy

Setting a new benchmark for developing skilled tradespeople across New Zealand

Active Refrigeration has taken a major step forward in workforce development with the launch of its first Apprentice Academy, a purpose-built internal training programme designed to support the next generation of technicians.

With more than 40 apprentices across Active Refrigeration and Thermal Solutions, the business has always believed in growing talent from within. The new Academy strengthens that commitment by creating a structured, high-quality training environment that sits inside the business rather than relying solely on external providers.

Why We Built the Apprentice Academy

Traditionally, apprentices complete a 3–4 year programme through external block courses. While effective, the Active leadership team saw an opportunity to lift the standard of training by bringing learning in-house.

Founder Craig Duff had long envisioned a programme that connected training with culture, expectations, and the real work apprentices see every day. The Apprentice Academy now brings that vision to life.

The goal is simple: Provide consistent, high-quality training that builds confidence, capability, and long-term career success.

A Centre of Excellence in Christchurch

This year marks the launch of Active’s first Centre of Excellence in Christchurch, dedicated to Year 1 apprentices. The programme blends classroom learning with practical workshops, supported by senior technicians and mentors from across the business.

Apprentices gain hands-on experience with tasks such as:

• Pipe bending and brazing

• Copper, steel, and stainless steel joining

• Maintenance checks on refrigeration systems

• Real-world diagnostic and service work

Active has now gained approval to sign off its own unit standards, reflecting the high level of training capability within the team. Four apprentices have already been signed off under this model — a milestone that sets the tone for the future.

Building a Unified Approach to Training

The Academy is designed to bring people together. Apprentices, mentors, and senior team members work side by side, creating a shared learning environment that strengthens culture and reinforces teamwork.
